Permanent marking of wood and wood products
Whether construction or furniture timber: the timber industry has to mark almost every log, board and strip, often permanently. We develop a suitable laser marking solution for every type of wood and processing method and adapt it to the production conditions on site.

LASER MARKING OF WOODEN SURFACES
If wood has to be marked with codes and other information for serialization, this is usually done directly in the saw or other processing machines. Markings such as the product name as well as the production location, date and time have to be clearly recognizable in order to determine the origin and traceability of the product. Legislators and trade associations also require markings such as the CE mark, DIN standard, grading classes and other quality seals. In addition, many manufacturers also use wood surfaces themselves to place their logo on them. Because wood can have different densities and surface properties depending on the species, laser coding and marking systems have to be well adjusted to the respective surface in order to achieve the best possible color contrast for direct marking.
For example,CO2 marking lasers are often used by the woodworking industry for laser marking wood when the marking needs to be particularly durable and abrasion-resistant. The marking is burned into the wood and is therefore permanently resistant to the effects of weather and chemicals. Further advantages ofCO2 marking lasers are their low-consumption operation, the possibility of assigning different print layouts and their resilience. They work reliably even under the often difficult environmental conditions of the wood industry and operate reliably and smoothly even in fluctuating temperatures, high humidity, dust pollution and strong vibrations.
What is important for laser coding and marking solutions for wood?
- Reliable work in dusty environments (protection class IP65)
- Easy integration into saws and wood processing machines
- High marking speed for high cycle rates
- Flexibility for adaptation to changing wood types and products
- Standard-compliant marking, e.g. for pallets (EPAL mark, IPPC logo)
Industrial laser coding and marking solutions are used throughout the wood processing industry. They are used to mark tree trunks as well as boards, timber, panels, construction timber, packaging wood and pallets. As integrated systems, our coding and marking systems are optimally adapted to the respective marking requirements and support the wood industry in reliably meeting its high quality standards.
Application examples for wood marking
- Position markings on logs, boards and panels
- Grade and quality markings on solid wood
- Printing of large logos on the edges of stacking material
- Edge marking of material boards with batch number, standardization, trade shows, CE mark
- Feather or edge lettering in small print on plywood
- End face labeling of beams
- Markings for the processing process on solid wood (saw protection markings, strength classes)
- Marking of packaging wood and pallets in accordance with legal requirements

EPAL organizes the EPAL Euro pallet exchange pool and contributes to the safety, quality and sustainability of international supply chains with standardized pallets made from the renewable raw material wood. There are currently around 650 million EPAL pallets in circulation. These and other EPAL load carriers are produced and repaired by over 1,600 EPAL licensees.
The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) prints the heat treatment of wood packaging to eliminate possible pests in the wood. This is intended to prevent them from spreading to other ecosystems. The treated packaging and pallets are marked with an IPPC logo and the manufacturer's license number.
