STANDARD-COMPLIANT VERIFICATION OF PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS
The pharmaceutical industry and manufacturers of pharmaceutical products have to comply with extremely strict marking regulations. In the European Union, these are regulated by the Falsified Medicines Directive 2011/62/EU and the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/161. These regulations determine how medicinal products and medicines have to be marked and include the obligation to serialize prescription drugs and the requirement for tamper-proof packaging. For this purpose, the packaging is provided with a unique identifier in the form of a 2D-Matrix-Codes, the information contained therein is also printed in plain text and an additional seal is applied.
The Falsified Medicines Directive 2011/62/EU prints the information and codes that have to be present on every prescription medicine in the EU. In addition to the product code, serial number and a national identification number in plain text, this is a 2D-Matrix-Codes with information for the unique identification of the medicine. Pharmacies and wholesalers use this code to verify the authenticity of medicines before dispensing them to customers. Special verification systems and verifiers are used to ensure that the 2D-Matrix code contains the correct data and is perfect for machine readability. These ensure that the coded medicines meet all legal requirements and can be traced back to their manufacturer.

Since 2019, prescription-only medicinal products in the European Union have had to be provided with a unique identifier and a device to detect possible tampering in accordance with Directive 2011/62/EU in conjunction with Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/161. This is intended to protect consumers and manufacturers from counterfeit medicinal products.
