Other variable data such as shipping or packaging time as well as static information such as logos can also be printed directly without the space being limited by the label size. High-resolution inkjet printing systems with fast-drying, high-contrast inks are usually used for direct printing on cardboard packaging. These ensure optimum readability of the shipping information as barcodes and in plain text.

The SSCC is an 18-digit identification number for transport units that is only assigned once worldwide. This allows shipping cartons, pallets and containers, for example, to be tracked internationally from the sender to the recipient. In Germany, the SSCC is also called NVE (shipping unit number). The SSCC is a mandatory element on every GS1 transport label.
