Fiber laser technology

Solid-state laser

The fiber laser is a system for fiber laser marking and belongs to the so-called solid-state lasers. In this process, the laser light from a diode laser is guided over a very long distance through an optical glass fiber and amplified. This produces an extremely intense laser beam with outstanding beam quality. A pulsed fiber laser with a pulse duration of 100 nanoseconds is usually used for fiber laser marking.

How does a solid-state laser (fiber laser) work?
How the fiber laser works

A fiber laser is an especially type of laser in which the light is amplified by an optical fiber doped with rare earth ions, such as erbium or ytterbium. These ions are crucial for the amplification, as they are put into a high-energy state by pumping with external light sources, often diode lasers. As soon as the ions enter the excited state and then fall back again, they emit photons. These generated photons move through the fiber, exciting other ions and thus amplifying the light.

Fiber lasers offer numerous advantages, including high efficiency, excellent beam quality and the ability to create compact and robust systems. Due to these properties, they are widely used in many areas such as materials processing, medicine and telecommunications.
