FOOD LABELING WITH INKJET
A lot of information and coding can be found on food packaging. These include barcodes, 2D Codes, batch numbers, batch labels, ingredient lists, nutritional value and allergen information as well as the best before date (BBD). In the EU, the Food Information Regulation (FIR / EU No. 1169/2011) regulates exactly what information has to be included on food. This regulation provides food manufacturers with clear, uniform and binding requirements for food labeling. It thus ensures that consumers can obtain comprehensive information about the origin and ingredients of food when making a purchase. Primary or secondary packaging is often marked on the food production line using an inkjet printing system. It is important that all inks and other materials used are food-safe and therefore harmless to health. In the EU, the so-called food grade inks have to meet the requirements of EU Regulation 1935/2004/EC and be approved by the BfR (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment). For the American market, the requirements of the FDA apply.
