INNOVATIVE LABELING SOLUTIONS FOR CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

GHS labels in the chemical industry

Multicolored hazardous substance labels are mandatory for chemical substances and mixtures. The so-called GHS labels contain standardized safety and hazard information and contribute to the safe handling of chemicals and the prevention of accidents worldwide.

Internationally uniform and clear

STANDARD-COMPLIANT LABELING OF CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES

The incorrect use of chemicals or errors during their transportation can have serious episodes for people and the environment. In order to keep these risks as low as possible, the chemical industry is obliged to label chemical substances and mixtures with clear, standardized hazard labels. These are very often affixed to the packaging of chemical products in the form of a GHS label. The appearance and content of the GHS labeling are precisely defined in the GHS Regulation and the European CLP Regulation and are regulated in a globally uniform manner. This not only increases safety during the transport and use of chemical substances, but also facilitates international trade in them, as no country-specific safety and environmental standards have to be taken into account.

Product identifier, CLP pictograms and more
What GHS labels on chemical products have to contain

The following elements are mandatory on a GHS label:

  • The product identifier is a unique technical name or number of the respective chemical substance or mixture. It should enable anyone handling the chemical to clearly identify it and deal with possible dangers.
  • The square GHS/CLP pictograms graphically show the risks that can occur with a chemical. They have to be printed in red, black and white. A GHS label can contain more than one pictogram.
  • The pictograms are supplemented by signal words such as "Danger" or "Warning, depending on the severity of the danger.
  • Another element for assessing the danger is the hazard statements. They print in more detail what kind of danger the chemical can pose and how serious it is.
  • The safety instructions on the GHS label provide additional tips on how to avoid or reduce the respective hazard. Supplier information with the name, address and telephone number of the manufacturer or supplier of the product is also mandatory on the label.

FROM AUTOMATIC LABELING TO INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS FOR CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES

Industrial labeling solutions are used throughout the chemical industry. Labels are applied to many different materials and containers, such as plastic, cardboard, bags, pouches, bags and metal containers. They support the identification and tracking of chemicals throughout the entire production and distribution cycle and thus make a decisive contribution to the safety of people and the environment.

Application examples for the labeling of chemical products

  • Labelers integrated into production lines for primary packaging (in-line labeling)
  • Multi-colored GHS labels according to CLP regulation
  • Multi-sided, flexible robot labeling
  • Dispensing systems for multiple labeling

GOOD TO KNOW
GHS
Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals

The United Nations (UN) drew up the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Marking of Chemicals (GHS) to create a globally applicable system that allows dangerous chemicals to be identified fast and safely. In Europe, the GHS was legally implemented in Regulation EC No. 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation).

UFI code
UFI coding

According to the CLP Regulation (EU Chemicals Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008), the UFI code has to be printed throughout the EU on all mixtures that are classified as hazardous to health. UFI stands for Unique Form Identifier.
