UDI marking: From practice for practice

At the open house of coding and marking specialist REA Elektronik, industry experts will provide information on the UDI marking requirement due in 2025

Mühltal, July 25, 2024 - In May 2025, manufacturers of certain class 1 and 2 medical devices will face a deadline: in accordance with the European Medical Device Regulation 2017/745, they will then have to mark products with an individual identification, the Unique Device Identification (UDI). On September 11, 2024, the coding and marking specialist REA Elektronik is hosting a free open house on how this can be achieved, with presentations by industry experts and the opportunity for direct exchange.

However, marking the non-absorbent, vapor-permeable nonwoven fabric is proving to be comparatively difficult if the print is not to smudge or the ink get inside the package. At the UDI event organized by REA Elektronik, Nicole Kaller, a representative of the Tyvek® manufacturer Dupont, will be giving tips on how to achieve successful marking. Dr. Harald Oehlmann, an expert from the automation specialist Elmicron, will also explain the basics of UDI. Jakob Romer, an employee of Paul Hartmann AG, which already manufactures class 3 medical devices subject to marking requirements, will report on how the company has integrated the UDI obligations into its processes. Volker Ditscher from Wipotec will talk about batch coding using global standards. In his presentation, REA VERIFIER expert Wilfried Weigelt will take a closer look at the importance of ensuring code quality.

“In many discussions with affected companies, we have identified a major uncertainty regarding the UDI marking requirement that is rapidly approaching them,” says Tobias Thiel, REA's key contact for medical technology. “With the external and internal experts at our open house, we want to give them free and non-binding access to important first-hand information – in presentations and subsequent personal discussions to clarify individual questions. That is why we have designed the event as an in-person event rather than an online format.” With live demonstrations of their technologies, REA Elektronik will also show UDI marking in practice. Representatives from the company's departments will also be on hand to answer visitors' questions if necessary.
